From a Métis perspective, it is also important to remember that Métis children were affected by residential schools, day schools, boarding schools, and other colonial systems designed to separate Indigenous children from their families, cultures, languages, and identities. The message that “Every Child Matters” reminds us that reconciliation is not only about remembering the past, but also about listening to Survivors, learning the truth of our shared history, and ensuring that Indigenous children today can grow up proud of who they are, connected to their families, communities, cultures, and traditions.
